Illegal. Street Art Graffiti, 1960 – 1995

The Saar Historical Museum will present the exhibition “ILLEGAL. Street Art Graffiti 1960 – 1995” starting May 18, 2024, at the museum on Saarbrücken’s Schlossplatz. The exhibition showcases groundbreaking works from the early history of American and European street art and graffiti, with a focus on early illegal pieces. Combining a historical perspective with a visually stunning and immersive presentation, the exhibition by the Saar Historical Museum is the first of its kind worldwide.

Key works and rare pieces never before displayed, created illegally – without permission and without commercial intent for an audience on the streets – will be featured. The selection of 120 artists from over a dozen countries is the result of extensive and meticulous research. These works were never intended for a museum and, with few exceptions, have not been preserved in their original form. Nonetheless, the Saar Historical Museum has managed to locate and bring original pieces to Saarbrücken, with the furthest loan originating from California.
