“MAXIMALINVASIV” – A gallery takeover by Lill.y and Lack, Take a Butcher’s Gallery, Düsseldorf

, by Bart Van Kersavond

“Is art by street artists, when it hangs framed in a gallery, still street art?” A question that is often and vividly discussed and that we, of course, also encounter again and again. Recently we asked ourselves: What would an exhibition actually look like if we, as gallery owners, were to stay out of it? If we left the orderly, planned path and simply opened the door to the urban beautification vandals? An intriguing thought – so intriguing that we have now realised it with two great people: On Monday, 6th of June, we handed over the gallery keys to Lill.y and Lack – two Düsseldorf sprayers who have been designing walls in all possible and impossible locations with passion and skills for years. And now ours too. Over the next five days, Lill.y and Lack will design an exhibition and do whatever they think they have to do. Our job is to wait in suspense. Because we don’t know what will happen. What awaits you and us in the end. And whether this invasion will change the gallery forever. All we know is that it will be exciting. All the more reason for us to look forward to the opening with you – on Friday, 10.06.2022 from 7.30 pm.

ABOUT THE ARTISTS:

LILL.Y is a trained painter decorator and has been working as a sprayer for around 10 years. Her initial subjects were cartoon characters, but in recent years naturalistic spray-painted birds have become her trademark. Through countless collaborations with other sprayers, she has created exciting compositions of differing graffiti styles. Her canvas works are also often based on elements from flora and fauna.

LACK is also a professional painter decorator and has expanded his artistic sphere from Düsseldorf to Dresden. His wall works, most of which are found in and on abandoned buildings, are predominantly abstract and play with their surroundings. Lack uses the space available to him as well as randomly existing objects, thus creating new perspectives and levels of perception. He creates his studio works on canvas and wood with spray paint, but also with oil and other materials.
