Urban Art Biennale 2022 at the Völklingen Ironworks

, by Bart Van Kersavond

In 2022, the Urban Art Biennale will take place for the sixth time at the World Cultural Heritage Site Völklingen Ironworks. Since 2011, new developments and positions in international urban art have been presented. In the meantime, the Biennale at the UNESCO World Cultural Heritage Site Völklinger Hütte has become an integral part of the urban art world map. The entire area of the Völklingen Ironworks becomes a congenial dialogue partner for the art that has developed from street art and graffiti. Numerous works are created in situ in the World Cultural Heritage Site especially for ‘their’ place in the Völklingen Ironworks. On display are, among others, spatial installations, works on canvas, sculptures, stencil graffiti, paste-ups, augmented reality and murals.

Urban artists from all over the world have visited the Völklingen Ironworks to leave unique works of art in the industrial landscape of the World Cultural Heritage Site, especially in the garden wilderness on the site of the former coking plant: the street art duo Os Gêmeos from São Paulo, Vhils from Lisbon, the French pochoir pioneer Jef Aérosol, Mambo from Los Angeles or the Franco-Brit YZ, to name but a few.

The huge site of the former Völklingen Ironworks offers numerous auratic locations that are predestined to enter into exciting and congenial symbioses with Urban Art – between gigantic machines, reclaimed nature and rust-brown dust walls. In 2022, the city centre of Völklingen will also play an important role in the Urban Art Biennale by making the urban environment of the World Heritage Site its own – back to the roots.
