Roas favorite place in Gent

, by Bart Van Kersavond

The Belgian artist ROA has been in demand worldwide for years. His murals of animals – mainly in a drawing style in black and white – can be found in many cities of the world.

Before he became internationally known in 2010, the urban artist was on the road in many deserted places to playfully insert works for example on ivy-covered walls into his surroundings and to refine his painting style. His favorite place in Belgium was the Malmar factory in Ghent. He left almost 60 works there.

This abandoned site is now to be converted into a residential project. However, the city of Ghent is committed to the preservation of Roa’s works, which are to remain accessible in a “Roa’s Openair Expo”.

My visit dates from June 2018, there were no excavators to see yet.
