The six-decade exhibition of Cooper’s artistic work features not only well-known photos but also unpublished material and personal objects. Cooper’s iconic images have burned themselves into the cultural memory of entire generations of artists; for over forty years, she has documented and shaped the graffiti and urban art scene worldwide. In addition to 300 photographic prints and 1,200 digital photographs, the exhibition also includes 250 artefacts from Cooper’s collection, such as Blackbooks, the original artwork of Subway Art (with Henry Chalfant, 1984), 35 works by artists in the Remix section, and blowups by Dondi, Lady Pink, Keith Haring and Lil Crazy Legs. Curated by Jaime Rojo and Steven P. Harrington, the retrospective traces Martha Cooper’s life from receiving her first camera at the age of three, to her initial successes in New York, to her current work as a world-famous photographer.
