Jim Avignon „Here Comes the Bad News“ // Urban Spree

Jim Avignon returns to Urban Spree Galerie for his second solo show “Here Comes the Bad News”, 2 years after « Permanent Jetlag ».In his only exhibition in Berlin for the year 2019, Jim Avignon describes the mood in the world and in Berlin in particular with his usual wit. Gentrification, Global Warming, Surveillance Capitalism, Alt Right… here comes indeed the bad news. His paintings are a mash-up of cartoony figuration, expressionistic composition, – a maximum of expression with a minimum of lines.

Exhibition till 8.09.2019

“In your face” // Kulturspäti

The Argentinean street art artist, Caro Pepe, takes us into the world of women with her elfish faces. With all her aesthetics, harmony and fractures she takes us with her…let’s go on an enchanted journey. It’s LADYSNIGHT🥂💥

“Ich habe noch Kleister in Berlin.” // Serigraffeur

In recent years Jean Peut-Être has been pasting around the world, in the background of the city, on your walls but also in the “underground”. He travels from Berlin to Buenos Aires through Paris, Barcelona, Brighton, London and much more, and so he meets more and more other paste up artists who also make so-called paste-up art. But Jean Peut-Être doesn’t just stick frontally, he actually makes huge compositions with his collages and needs a basic material for it, which he partly prepares himself by screen printing and typography, or he collects posters, lottery sheets, antique paper, archive plans, etc… He and others make a round together, through spontaneous collaboration wild new compositions emerge, and very often Jean Peut-Être gets a few collapsed sheets of paper: stencils, drawings, paintings, photographs. Now Jean Peut-Être returns to Berlin with his suitcase and transforms our gallery into a backyard, full of paper, freshly pasted. Featuring: Fatal, Mimi the Clown, Treize Bis, B.A. Pasteup, Paris Redux 68 and Zelda Bomba.

7.09.-22.09. Tu-Su 12-20h

Andy Kania – “Habe Durst wie Harald Juhnke” // Raum für drastische Maßnahmen

Kania’s works provide insight into urban, seemingly bizarre residual realities that are not displayed, but first shared. The medium of photography as a producer of “”crazy images rubbed off from the real”” (Barthes) is reflected in the sensitive depiction of peculiar marginal figures that seem to be worn down by reality. In the field of tension between the grotesque and the aesthetic, between the repulsive and the attractive, Kania manages, through intimacy, to break down the boundaries of asocial voyeurism and to enable and promote urgently needed social empathy.

It’s 18,70m tall and the walls are 2m thick. It was used for protection against bombs. Now the bunker is under monument protection. The outside is a climbing resort and the inside is filled up with the artworks from LAKE from the last 25 years.

Alexis Fidetzis – Flucht Tor •or• Rabbits are proud of running // Hošek Contemporary

Flucht Tor is playing with the ideas and the visual vocabulary behind western revivalist triumphal arches. Although the inspiration behind the design of the piece is obvious, the iconography found in the details creates a rather antithetical narrative to those illustrated in glorification monuments. Instead of a perpetuated fantasy of bravery and duty, Flucht Tor tells a story of escape and desertion.

Curated by Petr Hosek.

Urban Refractions // Kimgo Project Space

In his work “City Refl3ctor” the artist Michael Ang investigates interpersonal relationships, empathy and the reflection of one’s own self. The interactive work invites visitors to take a look at themselves and others. One is enchanted by his own mirror image – Narcissus is one of the best known examples of this. Switching identities. Shared identity in public space.

The artist duo Atelier KIM & GOTTLIEB shows the new video work “Kumulus”. This generative video depicts our contemporary computational understanding of what we call “climate”. Clouds are simulated, the simulations devolve through wireframes to fluctuating points of data which are both Nature and art.

The world of trains and train journeys has always been a world of light signals, in which time is ticking otherwise than off tracks. With her project “Along the Lines” the installation artist and curator Natalia Irina Roman transformed in 2018, former signal towers in Berlin in cooperation with Hauptstadtkulturfonds, into spaces for arts, seen from trains passing by and from train platforms. She re-actived with her light installations the former towers and highlighted their potential in a city dealing with an increased scarcity of space.

Sa. 07.09. – Th. 12.09., 18 h till 22 h

Lowbros // FIT

The works of the Low Bros are moving in a field of tension between tradition and progress. In post graffiti and urban art, there seems to be a tendency towards more and more brand collaborations, whereby the critical attitude towards commercialisation also seems to relax itself more and more with an ever-increasing scene, and cooperation with brands often even represents a kind of “”distinction””. In their work at the FIT, the artists will deal with the compatibility of branding and urban art through their own fictitious products and brands.

SPOT // Supalife Kiosk

Spot, recognize, point, perceive, spot, find out, location, sift, swab, place, splash, make out.

In the group exhibition SPOT, urban art meets street art; outside meets inside and new meets old. Spontaneity and improvisation are our allies. We, too, are curious!

Included are Various & Gould, Evol, Bronco, Sp38, Power Outage, Dave the Chimp, Der Anonyme Plakatabriss, Mesiasoners aka Mesy, Marycula and Friends.

Su 8.09. 11-18h, Mo-Sa 11-20h

Petra Branke: No Fotos! // Culture Pop Studio

10.000s of followers in the social media channels, 100.000s comments and likes and almost as many pictures. Petra Branke is everywhere to take photos of Germany’s artists and cities. She is restless, always on the move. With watchful eyes for special places, human interactions and funny, unique happenings. In the focus of her work are the artists and their artworks, the joy of spending time together while an artpiece is being made in the streets or the streets themselves. Thus, she captures authentic and unadulterated moments. Other photos include slapstick moments, for which Petra got an eye like noone else. As part of the Urban Art Week 2019, her photos will be exhibited in a solo-exhibition for the very first time. Photos, that invite you to be astonished, to shake your head, to laugh and to feel. The exhibition presents 30 photos from recent years and hundreds more taken by Germany’s most famous street life photographer.

Inklusive Streetart-Workshops/Siebdruck & Braille Graffiti // Schwarzenberg e.V. – Neurotitan

SIEBDRUCK/SILKSCREEN is a printing technique that works similar to a stencil. In the workshop we print bags and posters together, which can be taken home at the end. BRAILLE GRAFFITI makes street art tangible in Braille. Together with the artist Alexis Dworsky, we translate graffiti into Braille and jointly install a Braille graffiti in the courtyard of Haus Schwarzenberg.

Forum – “Berlin: don´t kill your art” // Haus der Statistik

An Urban Art Forum for Berlin Urban Art in Berlin needs exchange. Numerous projects enrich the city, but hardly ever enter into conversation with each other. The city of Berlin is reserved when it comes to the art movements of Urban Art, but is not afraid to use them for its international city marketing. The effects on the local level are often incomprehension and a lot of work without public funding for almost all actors. Berlin needs dialogue and an Urban Art Forum that makes discussions possible.

deerBLNstudio

Christian Rothenhagen is a freelance artist / illustrator / designer from Berlin. In illustration, the spectrum ranges from graphic recording and logo development to conceptual vector-based pictograms and icons. In his artistic work, Rothenhagen mainly deals with urban life and urban change. Always with a very personal perspective and clearly focused – never losing sight of details. His main focus is on “his” city of Berlin, San Francisco (his second “home”) and Toronto. He mainly works with pigment liners, markers and varnishes on various papers, cardboard and wood.

Plus Minus Live Painting Performance

In +-, an installative performance by Sophia Melone and Max Homage, two berlin-born and based graffiti artists, the causality of action becomes visible. On two sides, a long, plain wall of canvas will be treated with various textures. Spraycan, acrylic paint, ink and markers will be used to show the effects of layering. On the backside, the art will effect pieces of the work too, so the styles mix in their intensity and visibility. Sophia Melone & Max Homage have been working together for more than a year now, always testing limits of size, scale, simplicity or voluptuousness. In their background, Homage is the bombing street kid and Melone the face painter, no matter which material.

Wildstyle Academy

The oldest graffiti shop in Europe stands like no other place in Berlin for hip hop culture. Since 1991 it is a guarantor for the authentic Hip Hop experience! But through the commercialization of culture, the former values of this cultural form were washed out and are today hardly recognizable anywhere in Germany. Owner Ben Mansour makes a powerful statement against this development and through his “Wildstyle Academy” calls on those who live and love Hip Hop to put the peace-loving and non-violent roots of this culture back into the foreground. Under the motto “Each One Teach One” he has started various Hip Hop programs in his shop, among others the Wildstyle Studios, the Wildstyle Atelier & the Wildstyle Workshops or the Graffiti Sport Jam! A real HipHop Mecca for Spandau, Berlin & Germany! Come by, it’s worth it!

Johannes Mundinger – Sichtfeld // Hosek Contemporary

After a one-month stay as Artist in Residence, Johannes Mundinger’s exhibition Sichtfeld (Field of View) will occupy the cargo hold of the ship of the Galerie Hosek Contemporary, Berlin. Sichtfeld shows his installative interplay with nation-state symbolism, The Flag as an abstract system that forms a narrative through color and form. Areas of color charged with meaning, anchors for the disoriented, whose hold functions through a fictional narrative of identity. Curated by Linda Toivio Johannes Mundinger is a muralist, who also creates installations and paintings. Born in 1982 in Offenburg, Germany, he studied in Münster and Brussels. He is based in Berlin as a resident artist at the Urban Spree gallery since 2012. He won the jury prize of the Berliner Kunstverein in 2013. Mundinger’s public works can be seen all over the world.

Urban Art Closing Party – Exhibition der Sketch Circles // Vorzeigbar

Techno Poetry by Marina Zumi // Urban Spree

There´s no light without shadows – always in pairs, always in conflict and often deceptive. In her work Zumi lives the apparent polarity of the two worlds. The refraction of her crystals, the world of the Shadowen just before the sunrise and her technocratic light installations, address the duel between progress and poetry. “Techno Poetry” is a snapshot of this artistic balancing act. Marina Zumi can not be an artist without becoming a mathematician. In her creation, technology is much more of a continuation than an exclusion of the poetic. Thus works have been created that are hermaphrodites between the two poles, seemingly from another lifetime.
