“pass on the flame” – MB6: Street Artists collaborate with ABURY Foundation
INTERNATIONAL STREET ARTISTS COLLABORATE WITH THE ABURY FOUNDATION TO RAISE FUNDS FOR LITERACY SCHOOL IN THE ATLAS MOUNTAINS
Leading international street artists as MAD C, DOTMASTER, GIACOMO BUFARINI RUN, LUCY MCLAUCHLAN, REMI ROUGH have joined the ‘Pass On The Flame’ initiative founded by the ABURY Foundation where Moroccan Berber bags become canvases for new works of art. The ‘Pass On The Flame’ Bags will be publically auctioned by Catawiki.com on 29th of April until the 8th May 2016 with all proceeds going to support the ABURY Foundation literacy school in the Atlas Mountains, Morocco.
When Andrea Bury, the founder of the ABURY Foundation, came to Morocco in 2008 to work with local craftsmen, she was captivated by the immense handicraft heritage. This admiration for craft lead her to collecting vintage „Shoukaras“ otherwise known as ‘Berber Bags’. It soon became obvious that many of these rare skills were vanishing as a direct result of fast consumerism and Chinese imports: the beauty, wisdom, identity and stories were also being lost to the past. For Andrea, the bag became a symbol of the lost heritage a small piece of cultural identity that may not be valued any more.
‘PASS ON THE FLAME’ focuses on preservation of culture and heritage through creativity. By engaging contemporary artists with a token of the past from another country it asks for their reflection on their own identity.
The artists involved in ‘Pass On The Flame’ also took part in the first ever Marrakech Biennale Street Art project (aka MB6: Street Art) curated by ATTOLLO. Altogether 17 murals were painted on the streets of two cities: Marrakech and Essaouira and include the biggest mural in North Africa. During their time in Morocco the same artists visited the school in the Atlas to create a collaborative mural with the young students.
Additional works have been offered for ‘Pass On The Flame’ charity auction to further support the initiative.
